Finding Magic Mushrooms in Nature

Human beings experienced hallucinogenic journeys on magic mushrooms and connected with divinity for millennia.  Today, our curiosity for psychedelic mushrooms is leading many to go out in nature and pick and prepare their own magic mushrooms.

Read on to discover more about magic mushrooms and where to find them.

Finding Magic Mushrooms

Psilocybin mushrooms are abundant in nature, and you may not need to go far to find them. You can find magic mushrooms growing in your garden or local park. Also, larger areas in the woods near a river or a lake are prime mushroom habitats.

You may be in time for the magic mushroom fruiting season if you know the right place and the right time to harvest magic mushrooms. Magic mushrooms come in all shapes and sizes, and you will need to be familiar with the different strains that grow in your area.

You will need to distinguish the less toxic magic mushrooms from the more toxic mushrooms when you pick them. Some toxins cause mild poisoning and others can kill you. Sometimes, two or more species of mushrooms will look similar, but you need to ensure that you are picking the correct shrooms.

Remember that magic mushrooms come in many shapes, sizes, and colours, and the only way to truly differentiate them is to know their appearance and go mushroom hunting.

Where Do Magic Mushrooms Grow?

For fungi to thrive, an environment needs to contain a lot of moisture and the air to be still and humid. Mushrooms perish easily in windy or dry conditions. Magic mushrooms are temperature sensitive, and they love fertile soil that is full of nutrients including fats, proteins, sugars, starches, and nitrogen. Shrooms also grow on the surfaces of tree bark, dung, fallen leaves, and compost and other rotting vegetable matter.

Magic mushrooms don’t need a dark environment although the lack of light helps to keep the air moist. Dense forest areas near to large bodies of water are ideal places to find magic mushrooms. Also, animal faeces, such as cow dung, have all the nutrients that a happy magic mushroom needs to grow.

Magic Mushroom Hotspots

There is an incredible variety of mushroom species and there are over 220 know species of magic mushroom. Some of these species grow in many places and others only grow in specific regions and under certain environmental conditions.

Psychedelic mushrooms are common in the UK and most of Europe. They also occur throughout large regions of North, Central, and South America, and Hawaii.

The other locations which have been abundant with magic mushrooms for millennia include South Africa, the east coast of Australia, South India, the Philippines, and most coastal regions of Southeast Asia.

Four Common Magic Mushroom Species

Psilocybe cubensis (below) and Psilocybe subcubensis grow in tropical zones throughout the globe. Psilocybe Cubensis is the most common species of magic mushrooms, and the appearance of both types is very similar. Both are stubby stemmed umbrella-shaped mushrooms. They have a mostly light to golden brown cap which is bulbous before fruiting. The cap becomes wide and flat when fully mature.

Psilocybe semilanceata (liberty caps) is a magic mushroom that grows in many places in Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, and Australia. The ‘liberty cap’ name comes from their dark bell-shaped tops. They have slim and wavy stems.

Psilocybe cyanescens (wavy caps) have undulating tops.  They are one of the most potent magic mushrooms in nature and have nearly 2% of active compound content in America. They also cover Western and Central Europe, New Zealand, and areas of Western Asia.

Psilocybe azurescens grown in the West Coast of the USA and possess a very high concentration of psilocybin of up to 1.80%. They also have a large amount of baeocystin which is ten times that contained in Psilocybe cubensis. This chemical is an analogue of psilocybin. They are pretty in appearance with a slim stem and a convex caramel coloured cap with a cone-shaped top.

You Can Grow Your Own Mushrooms

If you don’t fancy braving the elements and picking your own magic mushrooms, then you will be delighted to hear that you can grow them at home. Growing mushrooms provides for a year-round supply and enables you to try different strains from all over the world.

You can either use a standard grow kit and spores or make your own substrate from scratch. The first option is easier if your grow-kit has come from a reputable seller without contamination. Then you will only need to keep your grow kit in a dark and humid place.
